I'd recommend you wait before upgrading your pickups. You are new enough that you will change your mind several times and what you think sounds good will change over time. First, fool around with the settings on your amp, as someone else has suggested. If that doesn't do it for you, try some inexpensive effects. If you are not gigging regularly, there are lots of effects out there that are less than $30 that are perfect if you are not gigging or recording yet. My 2 cents.
