He doesn't use pedals to do this sound, mabey his wah toed down to get that added grit. The switch you were talking about is called the pickup selector switch, selector switch for short. Like you said, it has to be a 3 way for it to work good. Also, you don't need the switch, I do it without it all the time, it just doesn't have the precise cut off you get with the switch.
