My own 'Brand X' is a Yamaha SBG-1000 LP type with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge position and a DiMarzio SCHB at the neck. I've never felt the need for active pickups, but that's entirely up to you.

You might want to consider adding a phase switch to your setup. By balancing the volume controls to adjust the amount of cancellation, you can create some amazing sounds, without adding any flangers and such to your rig.
