I just got myself a Damage Control Solid Metal it's a dual tube distortion pedal it has active EQ, I've never been so impressed with a distortion sound in person before I tried this. For me this pedal in combination with a good drive like a tube screamer will give me pretty much any distortion sound I can imagine from soft rock to full on metal.

Its pricey however i believe damage control makes the best distortion pedals around hands down.
