I would say that's the best choice. As you say, that way he doesn't actually learn anything, which is the only way that the story works. If he learns anything at all, practically if he DOES anything at all, then the story kind of loses its main theme, or at least its potency. So yeah, that's the best way to go. Hope I was helpful.
