I find that with guitar, one can generally only concentrate on no more than two things at once. If you aren't singing, you are free to concentrate on both your strumming and your left hand. The trick to singing whilst playing is not having to consciously think about strumming with your right hand. Of course it just takes time and practice to develop rhythm in your right hand to a point where you don't have to actively think about it while playing
