I posted the thread and then went on to night shift at work, so i didnt check it, i had no idea there were so many responses :D

its all good, ive been religiously doing the excercises mentioned previously, and i must say, ive made more progress since posting this thread than i have since i noticed my crazy 3rd finger issue!

Thanks alot everyone

Just a quick note on spider pattern exercises etc. The chromatic ones are good for dexterity and co-ordination, but I would also suggest a three note per string exercise - something like:

e------------------------------------3-5-7--------
b-----------------------------3-5-7---------------
g-----------------------4-5-7---------------------
d----------------4-5-7----------------------------
a---------3-5-7-----------------------------------
e---3-5-7-----------------------------------------

The above is G Ionian (Major) scale. Once you've done this shift it up two frets, then another two etc.

The reason for this is that I've found in my students that the '1234,1224,1234,1234....' approach if used in isolation can lead to your fretting hand leaning rather than your fingers being in line with the frets.

No argument though. I'm not a talented guitar player - I practiced a helluva lot when I was a kid, and still do now. If I don't keep it up, I'll blow at my next gig.... it's that simple...
