Well...a power chord is supposed to be two strings--maybe three if you add the octave---but if you are hitting more than that, then yeah, that might be it.

Yes, you can do tremelo with two and three strings at a time. You can do it with entire barre chords---you often hear it at the end of a lot of rock songs. The end of 'Hot for Teacher' has a long two-string tremelo part at the end. Just start slow and build from there.
