Given up on fingerpicking...no. But I have given up on growing my nails. Besides the maintenance, it just feels gross to me. And yeah, I've briefly tried thumbpicks without being enthused (however some players use them to great effect like Antoine DuFour). So I'm just using the actual fingertips. Of course I do sacrifice the tone, but oh well, I'm surviving. For classical players who absolutely need nails, but have some issue (brittle nails or whatever) they resort to women's glue-ons that are shaped and trimmed to their needs. I've even heard of a player who makes his own "nails" by cutting up ping pong balls as they are cheap, give good tone, and are semi flexible.
