This is a pretty hard ask, I know, but would somebody be able to give me an idea of how much gain Joe Satriani uses for the lead guitar tone on his track, "Crystal Planet"? It's a very smooth sound, and I can tell he is using distortion and possibly a bit of compression, but I'm just not sure how much. Has he got the gain cranked right up and it just sounds soft and smooth because he's mostly playing legato, or is he using medium to low amounts of gain?

I just have to add how much I love this track... I normally don't listen to instrumental rock guitar, but the licks and melodies in this song are just so good - Satch sounds like a cross between Gilmour and Holdsworth on this song.
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.
