I have a cheap headphone distribution amp (100 bucks or so) as 6 sets of cheep cans (30 bucks each) for the same deal. I run a line out of my I/O boxes (well a Mackie Big Knob actually - but we have done all those jokes)

My favorite trick is to use isolation headphones so I get to listen to exactly what the mic is picking up to fine tune positioning.
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

once upon a time i was in a band ... we practiced in the drummers basment on occasion(think cement box)...towels in/on the drums ....a pillow in the bass drum .. also record the whole band playing at once mic'in each piece individually or we did the bass and the drums ... then filled in guitar .. and punched in 'fixes'

in truth it is going to be tough to get 'the sound' without mic'in the entire kit , but you might get by with ambient microphone placement i.e. place two mics out in front of the kit to record the drums in stereo (experiment with placement, but think of how the human hearing thingie works

You mean the ear?
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

actually i meant the two ears seperated by a short distance to allow 'stereo' hearing

Ohhh I get you. Good point, I guess that if the mics pick up what you would hear, that would be desirable.
