The guy you're talking about probably has top of the line equipment, a sound tech and a mixing engineer tweaking his sound. Basically, lots of money can get you the sound you want. On the cheap, you can still improve some things. Better pickups, new tubes, new speaker cabinet, compression pedal... & a whole lotta years of experimenting.
Even when you find a sound you like though, you end up changing it cause you want something different.
