I don't know about string cleaners - I just change them.

I use Yamaha polish, but any product specifically made for guitars is probably OK.

Just be careful to never use furniture or car polish! These products often contain silicone, which is just about impossible to get rid of. Once that stuff contaminates a guitar shop, it can spread to every guitar that gets worked on, and it will ruin any attempt at applying new finish.
