I'd pick Alice In Chains as the more sophisticated and instrumentally skilled band, but I think Nirvana had a creative energy and lyrical honesty that AIC just didn't quite have. Both were important and talented bands.

Also, +1 for mentioning Silverchair - but I've got to say, Frogstomp is actually my least favourite Silverchair album. I prefer Freak Show.
