That is indeed true... it started out as sort of a free-flowing tribute to Syd that they did at live concerts, and it took the shape of a song by the time they started writing Wish You Were Here .
A really interesting Barrett song is "Scream Thy Last Scream" - the rhythms are great, and there's a pretty cool keyboard solo in the middle.
