I have no problem alternate picking with a floating hand, but picking with your hand rested on the strings have their advantages too. you can mute strings better and it takes less energy to pick if you have your hand rested somewhere. but thats just my opinion.

I got the same advice, except phrased a little differently. "You have to play like you have balls.'' Not the best advice I've ever recieve, but helpful.

The most influential lesson I ever learned was from my first instructor really early on in my guitar playing. Learning blues scales and the 8 bar blues.

i think i pick too hard. nobody's ever told me to pick like i have no balls.
