Nailing eq is why recording engineers get to charge so much. There are general guidelines you can find on the net but there are so many variables (type of recording device, effects used, instrument being q'd, style of play, etc, etc, etc) that eqing for yourself has to really be to your taste. I usually worry more about qing the whole mix rather than individual tracks. Eric will come in and tell me I'm an idiot but that's why I can't charge anything.
