Don't play it up to tempo right away, that's just asking for mess ups. It's much easier to start at a slow tempo and repeatedly practice proper muting and timing between your picking hand and fretting hand. Once you get that down well enough, it'll be safe to raise the tempo up a bit. It takes a lot of time as well, so don't expect to be using it a week after you begin practicing it.
