when I was just starting off, I got tons of tabs of all these songs I knew by heart anyways. and I slowly started learning each song. it didnt take me long to figure out the powerchords, or how mostly all the songs has the same sort of flare to them. later on I figured out that flare was the pentatonic scale, which I also just sortof ran accross in my playing around. basically, when I was just starting- I kind of played around with everything, seeing patterns in different types of music and starting to get the whole concept of guitar playing.
now later on, I started focusing on individual things that I really wanted to learn and get down so it would help with playing other songs.
so what I would say- do a little bit of this, a little bit of that untill you get a good feel for the instrument, then move on.
(oh, and keep in mind; anyone who has been playing 8 years will make it seem easy.)
