Besides, when this kid says to give up alcohol, hes giving up not getting trashed for 40 days. Its not like hes giving up his glass of wine with dinner at night. Being that the Bible also says you shouldnt endulge in drunkeness, in this case it makes it even less of a sacrifice.
The Bible also says that women who are having their period should not enter a church, as they are unclean.
