What you do is place the palm of your picking hand on the bridge, near the end of the strings. They should be laying on part of the strings that you wish to play. It sounds better with distortion. With your fretting hand, finger a chord or whatever, and strum while keeping your palm of the picking hand against the strings. If the sound is not too clear, move your palm further down the strings, closer the the bridge. If the sound is normal, that probably means that you need to move your palm further up the neck (resting on a greater length of the strings).
