To play a pentatonic scales, it is not necessary to play the root note first, you can start anything that is related to the chords. say, when Aminor is the chord, you don't have to start from the 5th fret 6th string or maybe 7th fret 4th string. You can start anywhere, say you know, the pentatonic scales,

e.g
Simple Aminor pentatonic
e---|---|---|---|11-|---|---|12-|---
b---|---|---|---|-9-|---|---|10-|---
g---|---|---|---|-7-|---|-8-|---|---
d---|---|---|---|-5-|---|-6-|---|---
a---|---|---|---|-3-|---|-4-|---|---
e---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---|-2-|---

You can start anywhere either from this numbers or the octave of these numbers.

It is good you wanted to know about this because this is what a new lead guitarsit should begin with. Take your time to master all this stuff. Oh, by the way, make sure your picking and fingering technique should be in the right way.
Up-Down-up-Down, this finger, that finger, the other finger... and so on...
