For just a beginners guitar I would recommend something like a Squier Strat. Not a cheap one that comes in a starters pack, but just the guitar itself.

Some people may disagree, but I had a squier strat as a first guitar and I still use it every now and then up to this day and I think it sounds like a descent guitar.
