On the staff, the higher the notes are, the higher they should be played on the fretboard? Or it has nothing to do with it?

For example:
o
----
------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------
------------o-----------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

Those two B notes. (The one on top is actually supposed to be on the leger line but that's just the way it can be done on the pc). Anyway, if I have to write the fingering of each, how do I know on what string it is to be played? They can't both be played on the same string, right?

If it's not clear enough, please let me know, I'll try to explain my question better. I'm trying to learn music theory but the book I have is quite basic and they don't seem to explain it. :| Thanks!
