Im not really a fan of Death Metal but Ive listened as well out of curiosity, and only COB left an impact on me coz even though they play very hard and heavy music, still it sounds melodic. I myself doubt if they are really a death metal band coz their sense of melody is amazing. They are too good to be Death Metal.
You can also find Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, and Dying Fetus on the same rack as Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and Enya (at least you can at the Best Buy I go to). Children of Bodom, simply put, just isn't death metal by style.
