A lot of resonators and older acoustic electrics had regular spun magnetic pick ups in them... look at the lennon gibson ej-130 (or whatever it is). it has a pickup placed just between the soundhole and the fretboard... i think a tele lipstick pickup with a chrome cover would look pretty darn good and sound alright too. IMO though... i wouldn't worry so much about the type of strings that you use. just use a nickle type acoustic string... the biggest problem to me would be string spacing... since generally string spacing is greater on acoustics than on electrics you would have to find a pickup that could accomodate the extra string spacing.
