when I first tried to play standing up it was very awkward. but you get used to it. in fact, I now play better standing up. my strap is 52" at it's maximum length, and I pretty much have it at like 48" or 49" so it's kinda low (there's more guitar below my waist then there is above it) and that's what works for me, I didn't start out that way though, I played for about 4 or 5 months before even buying a strap. and when I did try to play standing up, I had it pretty high, but gradually I lowered it some, and a little more, until it got to where it is now, which is comfortable, and also pretty good looking :D
