I would go with the airbrush myself. I have tried spray painting stuff like the gas tank on an old Honda motorcycle and find that alot of spray cans don't spray evenly or spray too thick. You could airbrush it or even stain it for a cool look then gloss over that. I would like to try something like airbrushing then sanding with a really fine grit and then glossing it.
