I'm a relatively new songwriter in a band for a year. Been
doing covers, but now we're stretching into original
territory.

My question is about tempo - our venue is alt-rock (think
Radiohead, Nirvana, that sort of vein.) My drummer and I
got in a small discussion about how in one song it's acceptable
for him to change the tempo to give the song more
'feeling'.

It would be ok to do this in the end, but right in the middle
of a song (it's in the bridge)? I'm talking beats per
minute. I don't mean halfing (or doubling) notes, depending
on how you look at it. To me, it just sounds unnatural,
like the song is sped up on a turntable or something.

What should I tell him? Am I taking this too seriously? I
think it tempo changes absolutely destroy a perfectly fine
song. I'm not talking about speed-metal here, where
different parts are intentionally sped up or down either.
I can understand tempo change works in some places.

Here's the song. Pay note to around 2:16
