Generally solid states, to most guitarists, don't have a convincing sounding distortion, therefore they use the clean channel on it. If you're gonna be using the clean channel, you might be playing a number of styles - jazz, blues, reggae, country, surf...
Then again, there are some guitarists that actually prefer solid state distortion, it tends to have a very scorching death metal distortion (too heavy for me...). I believe Pantera used solid-state amps (or some band of the genre...)
