Yeah I agree with zreynoldsp. Another thing I'd like to add tho, is to make sure to use all 4 fingers...one for each fret. So that if you play a chromatic scale your first finger is on the 1st fret, secnd finger on the 2nd fret, and so on. This is very important. For the first couple months when I started playing I never used my pinky and it slowed me down considerably. Not playing with ur pinky will reduce your overall playing by 25%. Also I mentioned chromatic scales, they work wonders. All that means is play like frets 1,2,3,4 on each string with the corresponding fingers and keep moving on to the next string group. It's a little harder to play on frets 1-4 as a begginer, so if the stretch is a little too wide, you can try at the 9th fret perhaps. So that would be frets 9,10,11,12 using all four fingers going down all 6 strings and coming back up. It's a simple excercise but once you get it down slow and go a little faster you'll be shredding in no time. Seriously. One tip tho...use a metronome, it helps you gauge how much you've improved and is extremely helpful for learning songs. Which brings me to my last point...when learning songs, take it slow. You're going for accuracy...if you have to play a song half speed for a week in order to play it well...then so be it. It's better to play it slower but with perfect technique than at the right tempo with more mistakes. Good luck my friend!
