This all depends on how much you're gonna spend. An entry level guitar is meant to be just that, however one from Squier or Ibanez is gonna be better than somethin ya pick up at Wal-mart. $100 jump in price makes a big difference in this range, even within the same brands.
I'll echo the endorsement of Epiphone...although I haven't played their entry level ones, my SG-400 is awesome (bout $350-$400).
