I think what you are talking about "volume when pulled up, tone when pulled down" is a push/pull pot... which would be similar to a concentric pot... A concentric pot is two individual pots stacked ontop of each other with two shafts that move indendently.... example... picture an old radio cassette player in a car or something. One knob would work the volume of the radio while a thin knob that is at the base of the volume knob operates the balance of the speakers... A push/pull pot is like a pot with a switch on it...example.... a push/pull pot can work your tone (values 1-10) but when pulled or pushed it would only turn something on or off.... like a kill switch for a pickup or something like that... But I relate to your problem with having the volume knob in the way... and a concentric knob certainly would be a trick way to move it. Another alternative could be simply find some knobs that aren't as big (if yours are even big?). And if your guitar does have a pickguard you can always buy a blank of pickguard material and rout the two slots out for your tone and your concentric volume/tone pots leaving you with a nice, smooth, detailed customization. I hope you get your pot placement woes taken care of!!! GOOD LUCK BRO
