I work hard so if I want to splash out x amount on a brand name guitar or amp then ima do that and I wont feel guilty about it.. Thats why I work so I can get then things in life that I want.. some people buy cars and other people buy other things but me, I love playing guitar.. I know the sound I want and I work hard to afford the Instruments and equipment I have .. Im no snob and I would never tell anyone to buy a guitar or any equipment that they wouldnt want..

Axl, you're absolutely right, you should be able to get whatever gear you want without getting **** from anybody. and without having to justify your purchases.
It's the people who are jealous that will attack you, which is definitely not what I was trying to do.

Agreed!!!! but I wouldnt say people are jealous as such they just have their opinion which is totaly fine but no one should tell someone they are wrong for getting this guitar over that guitar because its a certain brand name or price..

Well now outright jealousy is stupid. If these same people just saved their money instead of wasting it on low end gear they arn't happy with, they would have the stuff they really want.

Maybe it is a pet peeve, But I personaly can't stand the people who cannot play guitar, and have little interest in learning, that buy the super tweaked, custom limited edition, Elvis sneezed on it, guitar so they can pretend they can play, while doing the taunting "look what I got neener neener neener."

If you do not go "neener neener" thats cool... but for the others...

If they realy want to know... they can just whip out there tinky winkies to compare sizes.

I definately subscribe to the- sound -playability(over) name-price theory.

And for you Pony one.... Just so you know... Vw of any model...
are superior beasts!! :)

well, I think one other reason that people would buy a high priced instrument might be to show off to other guitarists. sure, no one in the audience might be able to tell the difference, but maybe just owning a gibson or a marshall or a mesa-boogie just to say that you have one may be reason enough to buy it.. now, I agree that if you don't know how to play the guitar that you should'nt buy the expensive stuff... but, if you buy the stuff and actually intend to learn to use it, then I have no problem with it... for example, I have only been playing about 8 months, but I keep hearing from several people that I'm pretty good, and I am actually looking at buying a gibson for my second guitar. I don't know if I could actually reach that guitar's potential, but I intend to learn how! I know that a gibson might not be the absolute BEST sounding guitar out there, but just cause it's not the best doesn't mean it isn't GOOD! plus, I'm an extremely competitive person, so you say that one quarter of the price is bragging rights? well, maybe that's what I want, is bragging rights! knowing that the other 3/4 of the price is to the sound! so, if these statistics were 100% true throughout all guitars, then a $1000 gibson still sounds better then anything $750 and below, which you would probably be spending on off-brands... k, I think I'm done my little speech, you all can start disagreeing with me now...

I just knew someone would try to use that comment against me sooner or later.

Even though you make a good arguement with the "statistics" loop-hole, if you would just take a real close look at your above statement, you've just proven the point of the entire subject!

I was not attacking those who own expensive equipment; as I myself have quite a number of items that would be considerd expensive and brand-name.
I WAS attacking those who base an items quality on price alone. And those who criticize and use degrading remarks towards other musicians equipment based on brand name.

So........, if bragging rights is what you think you need to become a better musician, then more power to ya!

But just to let ya in on a little secret bro, when I used the term "Bragging Rights", I was referring to those annoying people who focus more on the name plate instead of the sound of their equipment. Nobody likes a Braggard!

I didn't say I needed bragging rights to be a better musician, I don't base my skill based on the name on my guitar. nor do I judge anyone else's skill that way. and I usually don't brag, I wouldn't run up and say "I've got a gibson!", but if asked what kinda guitar I played I would like to be able to say something other then "I've got this cheap beginner-level ibanez" but that's just my natural competitiveness. a name on the headstock won't make you play better, but it can earn you respect, and respect is something I enjoy because I don't get much of it...

I see your point about respect, and to a certain degree, I totally agree with you bro!

Like you said; your a very competitive type of person. So the type of equipment you use is important to you for that particular reason. And that's cool, because it is what fits your needs.

But,.........I would bet that if you were to become a really awesome shredder, even on that "entry level Ibanez", the respect would be there in time. Regardless of the name of your equipment. That is where I was coming from.

Well i mean $h!t son, i had a 300 buck squier strat package, i wanted a better guitar so i upgraded mine with a seymour duncan hotrail pickup, then i wanted a better amp so i bought a used peavey 112 from my friend, then i wanted a better guitar so i bought a jackson dxmg, then i wanted a still better amp so i bought a crate...and the bad news is that i was probably perfectly fine with the squier pak, but if you want better stuff 99% of the time you have to pay for it.

Schakel, Leo Kottke has a signature model on Taylor guitars, so I figure he's good. Is he, from what you saw?

Just a little reminder; Eddie Van Halen started on a guitar he built out of fifty dollars worth of parts and sprayed with model airplane paint. This is the guitar he performed with for many years. Now they are making a reissue of that guitar and charging an obscene amount of money for it. personally I'm much more impressed with some kid that wants to play so bad that he makes do with what I consider junk. Than some wanker with an attitude that has his mommy buy top of the line gear for him so he can try and impress his friends. But hey, thats just my opinion. Peace my brothers!

no one said anything about my mommy buying it for me, I would still work hard and buy it myself.
