Ok,with your guitar unplugged simply tap and hold(kinda like hammer on to it) your high E string at the 9th fret...hear the octave?Now tap around other frets and you will hear dissonant notes.

Why does this occur and what is it called?

Also why dosn't an amplifier pick this up?
