1). Metallica basslines are not especially tough. Even Cliff's. I don't see how Jason having a side project takes much of anything away from Metallica. If anything, for me, it would make it easier for me to go pound out whatever the other guys wanted me to do.

2). If I'm playing with three guys who consistantly marginalize my role in a project, I'm going to need to do something on the side to make sure that my creative energies can go somewhere.

Otherwise, I'd burn out and end up quitting anyway.
