As an outside observer and not a fan, I like the premise of St. Anger and what they were trying to say with the album.

But I think it was really bad timing for them to do it.

1). Metallica basslines are not especially tough. Even Cliff's. I don't see how Jason having a side project takes much of anything away from Metallica. If anything, for me, it would make it easier for me to go pound out whatever the other guys wanted me to do.

2). If I'm playing with three guys who consistantly marginalize my role in a project, I'm going to need to do something on the side to make sure that my creative energies can go somewhere.

Otherwise, I'd burn out and end up quitting anyway.
