Nirvana was influential, absolutely, but it was not new.

The Melvins and a number of other Seattle bands (especially Mud Honey) were doing what Nirvana did well before them.

Nirvana, however, was the band that managed to find mammoth commercial success and so therefore are the band most of us think about when we think about "Grunge."
