One thing I believe is MUST for a beginner, is learning how to tune the guitar correctly. Get yourself a tuning fork or one of them guitar tuners you blow that sounds out the tone of each string. Then get an experience person check out the intonation on the guitar. If your guitar is outta whack tuning-wise, you'll get used to hearing things that way. Part of ear training; better to listen in tune from the start. Then do what others have suggested. I knew I guy that had the mechanics down for playing monster licks, but he had no idea he was out of tune cuz he couldn't hear that.
