Modes are cool but they wont give you something everyone else hasn't done. Try dominant pentatonic, japanese pentatonic, lydian flat 7, whole tone... something unusual. Thats they key to making a really kickass solo. Everyone's heard basic modes, but probably be impressed to hear some of the stuff ive listen. if you search for it online, you can find a lot of cool scales to work with.
