5 Essential Metal Artist Studies

The Style of Metallica

Calling all heavy metal guitarists! In this artist study tutorial, Ry Kihn will show you some of the musical elements that suggest the style of Metallica. So don your black leather and get ready to get into some killer heavy rhythm playing, dark scales and chord riffs, and some serious shredding patterns.

The Style of Randy Rhoads

In this artist study, we take a tour through some of the elements of the late, great Randy Rhoads style of lead playing. Some of the tricks we'll look at are using the on/off toggle switch, neck-bending, trills, diatonic triplets, and pentatonic licks

The Style of Iron Maiden

This tutorial will teach you some of the elements of the Iron Maiden style. Instructor Mike Olekshy examines their use of rhythms, their single note lines, their "two guitar attack", some of the types of progressions they use, and how they achieve their tone. You can play along with a Maiden-esque backing track to top it all off!

The Style of Zakk Wylde

Over the years, Zakk Wylde's style established him as one of metal's pre-eminent guitarists. He's mainly a blues-based pentatonic shredder, and in these six lessons we'll show you some licks that represent his overall style.
