Let's look at each section in detail:

Fundamentals: for Beginning Guitarists

Guitar Fundamentals

Guitar Fundamentals - For Beginners

Guitar Fundaments is our third-generation learning program geared toward the first-time student and those returning to guitar after some time. The program is divided into two sections, Guitar Fundamentals One and Guitar Fundamentals Two. Each self-paced course runs between one and eight weeks, and combined they take you from pure basics such as learning to identify the G string to playing all the major full chord shapes and reading music - the essentials of guitar which apply to most styles.

Guitar Tricks' tested approach, refined over years of trial and error, is to present a step by step guide that ensures you have a rock solid foundation, wherever you begin. For that reason Guitar Fundamentals is broken into two separate courses.

Guitar Fundamentals One
Guitar Fundamentals One is our guide for the Absolute Beginner. Guitar Fundamentals One takes you from the moment you pick up the guitar all the way to the formation of full major chords. No previous knowledge is required or expected. All lessons have been tested to be truly step by step, at the exact level of difficulty required to encourage rapid skill building.

Guitar Fundamentals Two
Picking up where Guitar Fundamentals One left off, Guitar Fundamentals Two helps you become a well-rounded beginning guitarist. Guitar Fundamentals Two covers scales, reading music, minor chords, basic song structure, and barre chords. The lessons are more difficult, with the speed slightly increased to build skill. At the completion of this course you will have a strong foundation to pursue any musical style in our thousands of lessons.

Guitar Style Courses

Style Courses - For Beginner to Intermediate

Once you have mastered the material in Guitar Fundamentals, either here at Guitar Tricks or through previous experience, you are ready for the next step. We call this stage, where you have basic knowledge but not a lot of experience, "Level One." There are three Level One courses which are divided by style: blues, country, rock.

Since each style requires different techniques, we carefully walk you through the learning process for the techniques applicable to each style of music.

Not only that, but each style requires different gear, different amplifier settings, different tone. We have you covered there as well, with tips many advanced players missed in their early education.

Want to be a blues man? Blues Level One covers all the basics: 12 bar, swing feel, turnarounds, slide.

Is country more your thing? Country Level One covers ghost strumming, boom-chick, Nashville numbering system, choking and muting chords.

Are you ready to rock? Rock Level One covers power chords, palm muting, arpeggiation, and more.

When you begin your Full Access Subscription, you can follow course sequences such as this one for Rock:
  1. Guitar Fundamentals One
  2. Guitar Fundamentals Two
  3. Rock Level One
  4. Rock Level Two
At the end of your Level Two course, you will have the skills necessary to play in the style of your choice, and be well-equipped to begin to explore all the unique tutorials that Guitar Tricks offers for that style.

You are also free to explore every style, or even become a well-versed in all styles. At Guitar Tricks, you have full access to everything and the choice is always yours.

The Process Continues for Experienced Guitarists

It is unusual to find an online guitar lesson provider that equally covers all guitarists, from beginners to advanced. Yet Guitar Tricks does just that. The key element is that we hand-select instructors who have the knowledge and experience - and the ability - to teach all the tips and techniques that experienced guitarists need to know.

Many advanced guitarists come to Guitar Tricks expecting to have trouble finding enough lessons to interest them. Then they are pleasantly surprised to find that Guitar Tricks has so many lessons on so many different topics that the problem turns into too many lessons instead of too few.

You will never feel forced into any style here, with the "buffet" of choose-your-own topics that let you gain experience and fill in gaps to make you a better player. Guitar Tricks is like a giant stack of guitar books and magazines, only better: completely organized, cross-referenced, with full video examples. Do you love reading those articles but wonder what they are supposed to sound like? That is where Guitar Tricks shines.

Genre Studies
Our number one tip for the experienced guitarist is this: borrow from another style. Stylistic and regional differences in guitar technique can lend a fresh perspective to your playing. Do you play country? Our metal instructors have some picking ideas to speed up your technique. Do you play rock? Our country instructors have string bending lessons that will add fluidity to your style. Guitar Tricks finds instructors who are true masters of their style, and then give them a forum to show you everything that style has to offer.
