Award winning Singer/Songwriter Caren Armstrong first laid hands on a guitar at the age of ten, and started teaching three years later (at age 13) in a local guitar studio. Since then she has taught literally hundreds of people to play guitar, and continues to be in high demand as a teacher and mentor. She divides her time between giving her trademark performances to national and local audiences, and teaching guitar lessons to a diverse group of dedicated students. Armstrong has never taken a formal lesson, but has "stolen chops" from many influences and genres, evolving a
strong rhythmic style that utilizes a large chord vocabulary, numerous open tunings and a right hand technique that often fools listeners in to thinking there is more than one instrument at play. While she is often recognized for her precisely decorated fingerpicking style, Caren also loves to kick a good groove to back her soaring vocals.
Born in Dallas TX, Armstrong grew up in the Los Angeles area and currently resides in the SF Bay area. In addition to her active teaching life Caren has found time to travel far and wide to perform her award winning songs and has self
produced 4 CDs. She has been hosting her popular monthly concert series "Celebrating Songwriters" in the Bay Area for the past 15 years. She was awarded top honors at the Emerging Songwriter Showcase at the Napa Valley Music Festival, and the 15th Annual Songwriting Competition at the Tucson Folk Festival, and has been a finalist at the Rocky Mt. Folk’s Fest and the Wildflower Music and Arts Festival. Caren was named as one of the top 10 artists of the decade by KALW radio in 2010.
