Problem with the A chord

I am a beginner learning to play chords. I have no problem switching from the A chord to D chord to E chord. My problem is that when i play the A chord i can't get a sound out of the D string. The tip of my index finger is pretty sore, maybe that the reason i don't no. Any Suggestions?

Thanks

Stick with it.

The A chord is tough for beginners but it comes with practice. You could try different finger placements. Sore fingers are inevitable but they will toughen up with time and harden.

Good luck.

I had a similar problem in that i have fairly thick fingers, my solution was to use my middle, ring and pinky instead of my first, middle and ring. I now alternate between middle ring and pinky and barreing with either my first or middle.

Try these alternatives, if they work for you great.

Good luck
Mike

If you fingers are to sore to play it you can cheat a little and place 1 finger across all 3 strings. Your guitar teacher won't like it but it is a trick we all use.

Another trick that I was taught some years ago is to use the middle and ring fingers only. Place the middle finger in between the D and G strings, and your ring finger in between the G and B strings. Provided you do not have extra small fingers, this works quite well. Don't know if it is good technique, but it works.
