A problem that i have is i can't hold the pick btwn my pointer finger and thumb it just doesn't work for me i use my seccond finger to hold it and it seems to do the trick fine, i have only been playing for a short while and am now wondering is this waht is called a "bad habbit" should i force myself to strum using my pointer finger to hold the pick or does it matter at all ?

that's the way Steve Vai holds it when he taps. If you've seen carlos santana, you can see his picking 'stance' isn't so academic too... So unless you need to shred at 240 bpm, you can't call that a REALLY bad habit. But learning it the proper way might help you later.

I believe Van Halen holds his pick that way, so it must be a bad habit that could only ruin your hopes of ever playing very well, just look at what it did to poor Eddie,, just kiddin' , the only drawback I can see is if you ever want to get in to playing with pick and fingers, that middle digit comes in quite handy,
