None of my friends know how to do this, and I saw it being done by a cover band but still don't understand.

Its this scream you do using your fretting fingers, and it can be done at the top of the fretboard. It seems like you bend a harmonic, but its really loud, clear, and screaming. I don't think its pinch harmonics, but I haven't learned it so I don't know. I believe its a common technique, so please help me out.

i think your talking about natural harmonics.
that sound can be made by doing a natural harmonic or a pinched and pushing the whammy down or really fast vibrato.
you can probally learn more about that at the whammy bar section in the topic at guitar tricks i beleive Johan and Magnus use that technique a few times.

a little late but try plucking a
natural harmonic on the g and or b string
near the 3rd fret with the floating(hopefully) tremolo pushed in a bit then
pull up on the bar. difficult harmonics to
hit but very high pitched and it makes a
screaming sound.
