well, it depends...
if you want to play funk, youŽll need a wah-wah, if you want to play jimi-hendrix-style songs, youŽll need both a wah and a distortion pedal...
the best thing for you to do is, if you dont have lots of money, is to buy a single overdrive pedal, cause the majority of bands around use it a lot, and its a great thing to play super-hyper-heavy-metal, (I personally love it...)
before you buy it, ask the salesman to indicate you the best for you style of playing

I have the Stevie Vai Bad Horsie pedal. It was 100.00 at Sam Ash. It has a very quick response and really makes the high notes scream. I am thinking about getting the Expandora pedal next.
I would go to your favorite music store and ask them to try out a few pedals. Either bring your guitar or find one close to what you have and experiment.
Good luck

I'm a little late with this but check this out.
I recently bought a LINE 6 POD, from Sam Ash. List about 500.00 dollars. Can get it for 275.00. This little device is used in many studios, to emulate the amplification of days gone buy. It has probably thousands of combinations, and it can be use for anything from recording, MIDI, or simply front end distortion of your guitar prior to its getting into the amp. It saves any combination of patterns you want it to, and is totally alterable. There are some settings that even have that odd after affect that Jimmy Page was using in Dazed and Confused (it think it was). And, for some extra money later on down the road, it comes with a mammoth stomp peddle.
If you have some more money, and I mean lots more (1599.00), Line 6 has an amp called the VETTE, that does this and more built in. Go to their web site and check this little baby out.
Any, how, by comparison, a Tube Screamer that does about 9 things, is a complete waste compared to this, which is a plug in. (Tube Screamers are batter powered).
