Please.

Alright, so I blew it on the Skylark, and Lordathestrings is peeved at me.

So, what can I do to my Traynor to squeeze out some more tone from it? I've heard talk here of replacing the speakers, and Lord has said that the Weber guy is pretty helpful. Also, perhaps a tube change can get me to where I want to get?

Right now, my amp has a really nice, glassy clean tone, and the dirty channel is OK. I'd like to be able to dial in a little more overdrive on the clean and have the dirty channel a bit tighter (it's a little muddy/messy).

I guess the amp is also overpowered at 40W or so (*look of shame from missing out on the Skylark*), but can that be accounted for by tube replacement at all?

I'd prefer not to attenuate or equalize; I like a simple rig.

Here's my previous post with info on my amp:
I have a Traynor YCV40 amp. According to Yorkville's online spec sheet (http://cgi.yorkville.de/en/amps/trayn/ycv40.html), it uses 3x Sovtek 12AX7WA Dual Triodes in the preamp and 2x Sovtek 5881 Beam Power Tubes in the power amp (however, I've read that it uses 6L6's elsewhere, so perhaps 5881's and 6L6's are the same).

5881's and 6L6's are the same.

I have the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe which is basically the same thing as the Traynor 40W. My dirty is also very muddy, unless I turn down the drive to about 4 and put the master up a bit. This gives me a really nice screaming/overdrive kinda tone, very nice.

I am going to be changing the speaker in mine to probably a Celestion Vintage 30 or something close to that. To Bring the mids and highs out a bit more.

So, eggman, it is time for you to make a pilgrimage. Register at The Plexi Palace (http://vintageamps.com/PlexiPalaceUBBcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=11), where you will find many devotees to the Traynor marque. (And several folk who know about lil' ol' Gibson amps). :)

Hmmm... maybe on this site I'll parade around as a Brit... yes, that'll do quite nicely. From now on, when you read my posts, put on a British accent in your head.

HA! DO IT DO IT...

A comparison between Fender and Marshall preamps tells a good bit of the story that you are looking for. Marshalls have smaller valued caps, particularly in the cathode bypass. The Fender runs about 25 microfarads, the Marshall runs around 0.68 microfarads. The next place to look is in the coupling caps...
