headphones suggestions

anybody got some suggestions for some good, but not too expensive headphones to use for recording and mixing. Also, what about some active studio monitors, again, not too expensive.

You don't want to mix using headphones, get a cheep pare of flat response monitors.

Headphones are bad for several reasons:

they distort the spatial localization of instruments when you pan.

they done accurately reproduce frequencies. Net end result of this is harmonies sound in when they are in fact out, a fact that may only come to light when you are showing off your work to friend through speakers....

they negate any ambiance (air) that speakers produce.

I use Aliesis M1 Active bi- amplified flat response speakers. They are about 400 USD

Headphones are great when you need to record in silence... but you definitely want to avoid mixing with headphones unless you really 'know' your headphones...

I have some AKG K141 headphones... they do the trick for me.

the only headphones that are realy suitable for mixing and recording is the AKG K-1000 .. but thats beyond 1.500 bucks

its basically two studio reference monitors hanging next to your ears without touching them.

and a very good, not too expensive standard studio monitor is the Yamaha NS10M - but i´m not sure if yamaha produces them anymore. they´ve been studio standard for quite a while.

Apparently they're not in production any longer because the cardboard used for them is hard to find. MSP5 is Yamahas response to its cancellation and according to this revue, they're better by adding more highs and lows, just not the mids. 319 usd too. I think I'm going to get some.
