This is the 'Myth or fact' thread. I want to debunk some stupid myths.

One myth that bothers me is that you need large hands to play the guitar really well. This is NOT true. In fact, Shawn Lane and Michael Romeo both are (were) examples of fat guitarists with chubby little hands. But MAN, their hands can fly! Anyone who ever says they never bothered playing guitar because their hands are too small is full of crap.

I'll post more myths when I think of some. I know there's plenty more.

Myth:

that Fender Strats/PRS's/Les Pauls/Ibanez'/etc are the be all and end all of guitars. there is no be all/end all of guitars.

that __________ is the best guitarist ever. it is subjective, and thus, there is no definitive answer to this. unlike a race car driver who crosses the finish line 1st 100% of the time, or something that nature, there is no real way to guage talent. not that there's anything wrong with threads in which people give their nominees for best/worst/coolest whatever guitarists ever, just don't act like you're the Encyclopedia Britannica or anything.

not everyone can play guitar. some people are either to deaf, too stupid, or too, uh, not-having-hands-or-fingers to be able to play guitar.

Fact:

sweeping is a hell of a lot easier than it looks on paper or sounds.

some bands do just plain suck.

there will always be a guitarist who is technically superior to you. so use this knowledge to strive to be the best you can be, so that if you ever meet this guy, you can outshred his ass. but remember there'll still be someone better after that. it's not about whether you're the greatest ever, it's about being the best you can be, and having a great time doing it.

FACT:

Your ears are much more important than tabs -- don't rely on the stuff you find on the web, trust your ears -- if you want to use tabs for a guide or point you in the right direction fine, but they are not the law (Unless of course you get one from the original author).

Fact- tone comes from the fingers. Not all of it, but enough to make an obvious difference.

Fact:

- Everything turns out alright in the end, my life motto and it works.
- Equipment is only as good as its user.
- You must listen to music to succeed as a musician.

Myth:

- A symmetrical face is fundemental to get recognized for your talent in this business.
- Bass is easier than guitar (if you think that you're one lazy ass bass player).
- Drummers are easily replaced by a microchip.

It's more of a 'Relax, everything turns out in the end' type deal. You know, there's a perfect solution for everything.

I'll agree with that, people should relax a lot more

I was at this party tonight and the 4 biggest guys in school accompanied by this 3 year sophmore retard pussy walk in

so this sophmore just starts punching my drummer in the face for basically no reason, and me and a few other kids rush in to help and all of these 4 guys (3 out of 4 of these guys bench no less than 300lbs) just push us back and there was nothing we could do but watch this guy punch our drummer (who had no idea what was going on) untill his girlfriend managed to calm the situation

it was terrible, I feel so bad I couldn't help him out at all

I have a problem! Gotta problem with that?!? By getting all... "excited" (can't think of a better word) about people who have "issues" or "attitude problems" you are in a sense doing the same thing. It doesn't really in the end, so just... play guitar. Yup, I forgot what I was talking about again...
